As a Registered Research Group, from April 1st 2010, NEURODEM Cymru’s Aims and Objectives may be summarised as:

’to increase the quantity and the quality of funded research on the dementias and neurodegenerative conditions involving research teams and researchers from Wales’.

Specifically this will involve:

1) Portfolio growth

  • To develop a balanced portfolio, reflecting Cause, Cure and Care

  • To develop a portfolio that covers the range of neurodegenerative conditions

  • To develop a portfolio that is responsive to the concerns of patients and carers

  • To develop a portfolio that reflects the concerns of practitioners, service managers and policy makers

2) Grant capture

  • To strengthen research collaborations within Wales and across the UK

  • To improve recruitment of research sites and clients and to broaden opportunities for patient, carer and practitioner involvement

  • To increase research capacity in relation to research in neurodegenerative conditions and dementia

3) Research with impact

  • To improve the integration of practice and research

  • To disseminate the results of research to maximise the impact on policy and practice.

Aims and Objectives (2005-2008)

The network aims to develop a close, and mutually beneficial, collaboration between research and health and social care. Achieving this mission will lead to the following developments:

  • A health and social care infrastructure which supports clinical research and removes barriers to its conduct; to ensure that the situation in Wales is at least as supportive as elsewhere in the UK – where the aim is to be world class.

  • Research and development will be more closely influenced by the issues and concerns facing service users, carers, practitioners and service managers, commissioners and planners. Stakeholders will have a closer involvement with the planning and conduct of research.

  • The results of research will have a greater influence on service provision, with more consistent implementation of evidence-based practice, and further development of translational research.

Objectives and Planned Activities:

NEURODEM Cymru will:

  • increase recruitment in research studies and broaden opportunity for patients, carers and practitioners to be actively involved

  • involve more services in research studies, by removing obstacles to collaboration

  • facilitate involvement of patients and carers – building upon existing examples of good practice in Wales

  • increase links with basic science research and facilitate translational research

  • offer opportunities for researchers in Wales to initiate large-scale projects through collaboration with other centres in the UK Dementias and Neurodegenerative Diseases network, and to attract external funding

  • facilitate the conduct of large, pragmatic trials of interventions in services across Wales

  • offer opportunities for people in Wales to participate in projects initiated by researchers elsewhere in UK, through the UK Dementias and Neurodegenerative Diseases network

  • bridge the gap between research and practice, through dissemination of research findings and greater dialogue between practitioners and researchers

  • act as a resource to assist people, including patients and carers, wishing to undertake research for the first time.
